The Enchantress of Numbers

Ada_Lovelace

Ada Lovelace, born as Ada Augusta Byron is considered to be the worlds first computer programmer who developed the first algorithm to be processed by a machine.  Here, circa 1845, Ada is finally able to apply her calculations based on a sequence of Bernoulli numbers to the Charles Babbage Analytical Engine.  She took extra care in processing her punch cards into the mad machine, which often made breakfast from her delicate programming arrangement. Charles Babbage spoke of her as "Forget this world and all its troubles and if possible its multitudinous Charlatans — every thing in short but the Enchantress of Numbers." Lovelace died at the age of thirty-six, on November 27th, 1852, from uterine cancer. Love conquers all.

Ed Law
"Hunting the Gowk"

Edward Law, 1st Earl of Ellenborough, often found time away from his political career to enjoy egg sporting. In 1827 Ellenborough partook on a Great Auk egg hunting trip in St Kilda, Scotland with his chivalrous greyhound Ponto. Back home, Ellenborough's yokemate, Jane was eager to cook the Auk eggs into a Beothuks pudding delicacy that was received with great delight at their various gala events. Jane forced an unstable relationship as Lord and Lady Ellenborough were divorced by Act of Parliament in 1830. Ellenborough died at his seat, Southam House, near Cheltenham, in December 1871, aged 81.

This is my latest SteamFolk character painting recently revealed at the new Gallery 46 in Rockville, CT. Thank you all who attended and provided such thoughtful feedback regarding my work and the gallery!
Jane Digby
"Jane Digby's last Soirée"

Jane Elizabeth Digby, also known as Jenny, lived her life as an aristocrat after her father Admiral Henry Digby set a wealthy family fortune when he took on prize money from a seizure of the Santa Brigada treasure ship in 1799. Here, in about 1825 we find Jane preparing for attendance at a grand Soirée with her first husband Edward Law, 1st Earl of Ellenborough. Unfortunately that evening set her demise of a promiscuous lifestyle that resulted in a life of discontent. She died of fever and dysentery in Damascus on August 11, 1881.

"Lizzie's return to Centre County" lands first place at the 2010 Monson Arts Council Spring show!
